My training was mostly core, if you talk about the formal stuff; my own experiences have been more far-ranging, and with teachers that encourage that. And I have found it to be Ok to decline requests/demands from various spirit entities. I generally try to be respectful- but just because someone is interested in me, I'm not necessarily interested in them (any more than I'd be in a romantic context).
