Generally they grow in wooded areas, though they are especially prone to pop up in areas recently burned by fire. I don't know much about the mulch itself other than it looked like there was some conifer bark mixed in it.

So, they don't do that well when inoculated in a log, but maybe its because they prefer a mulch substrate more along the lines of what you found them growing in. Do you know what kind of mulch it was, how deep, and how aged? Were there any other distinguishing characteristics of the place that they may have liked? Were they growing right next to the concrete foundation? If they were, I wonder if they like the soil to be more alkaline than the NW average. Also, do you know what their usual habitat is?

I'd be very interested to hear your observations!
