I don't do much drumming, or at least haven't tried to drum myself into trance; I have a feeling the movement would actually keep me on the surface, since usually I have to be pretty still physically to get into trance. Though I have no problem getting into trance so am not hurting for a method as it were. I have tried some drum tracks and though they were too fast for me (they made me anxious, like I was being chased, rather than running with exhilaration), they certainly worked. Too well, maybe even; I was so relaxed afterwards I couldn't make a fist.

But then I thought of something else, when you were talking about the spirit in the drum.

I've played piano for, and this is scary, forty years now, though I'm out of practice, and I just do it for myself. But I think playing it is where I learned to both go into trance and channel, because the music is definitely something coming *through* me, even more so than making art. And so then I wondered about the piano itself, that old beat-up Steinway I've been playing on for years, and which needs some repair now. Because every musician knows that instruments at the very least have personalities, if not spirits. So I tried approaching that piano in a shamanic way, in trance, and as a spirit ally; we are of course old friends, so that worked. It was very interesting. Moving, even. I thought I should share that.

In just over a week I will be attending my first drum making workshop. There we will make our own drums over the course of a weekend, introducing the drum to the community on the last day. I am terribly excited, and know that this is another step in the further shamanic work I am doing and will do.

Excellent post.

I really enjoyed reading this post. I've read a lot about meditation and trance but nothing I've looked into goes into depth on drumming. What little I've tried, I've always wondered about feeling the drum. What you say makes me feel better. Thank you so much for writing this!

Thank you for this! A story to share: my friend's precious drum got split when a friend of hers left it in her hot car while moving. She then had a dream, where the drum showed her how to fix it - visuals of each step, and the words "hide glue". She had no idea what hide glue was, but found some for sale online (its easy to make, but takes a bit of time and stinks up the house big time), went through the process she was shown (stitching the tear and then gluing another piece of hide over it), and viola! It sounds like new.
