As the others here, thank you for taking the time to record your thoughts and experiences and make them accessible. I found this recently and am excited about exploring it further, as what I have read so far contains many similarities with experiences and lines of thinking that I previously thought were unique to me. (I often find that if I think something is singular, it is only because I haven't learned enough yet to find out that it is not.) I hope you find peace and great learning in your new home and look forward to reading more.

I love your above comment regarding plants! I say this all the time. People are so short-sighted.

Also, your paragraph listing your books has, in the first sentence, the word "both" that should be removed since you're now listing more than two books.

I should do a FAQ for my blog and one for RTV, soon.

Thank you for sharing the path you are creating. IMHO creation of one's spiritual path is the core of shamanism. I must admit when I read some of your words in relation to your work and connection with animals, animal spirits, and animism I thought I was looking at ideas and beliefs that I have carried with me for many years. Nice to meet a fellow solitary practitioner in training, and your words and ideas do lend support for me to continue with my own path my own way. I look forward to reading more about your path and wish you great success on this journey. TF

Korak--Thank you for your kind words, and you're quite welcome! If there's anything I can do to help, feel free to let me know. And I'm always up for trading notes, too--talking shop with other folks is a very valuable thing as far as I'm concerned, especially as a solitary. Cheers, and welcome :)

Thank you, Lupa, for this facinating look at your own personal path into shamanism. I have to say, you are one of the most articulate and daring individuals I've "met" in the online pagan/therian community. I'm in a similar place along my own neoshamanic path. I enjoyed Ecoshamanism (though I didn't agree with certain things in it), and I also have very similar views on food and organic meats. Best wishes from a fellow therian shamanist (in training), Korak

[...] Therioshamanism has been defined by Lupa as shamanic animal spirit magic. A totally new system that she is creating and journaling about on her new blog - Therioshamanism.com. Prior to beginning this path, Lupa has written a number of books regarding neopagan animal magic, including “Fang and Fur, Blood and Bone: A Primal Guide to Animal Magic” and “A Field Guide to Otherkin.” [...]

It doesn't rely on killing animals; for one thing, you're extracting one single aspect of my personal spirituality and ignoring the rest in order to make a personal socio-political comment.

For another, you're completely ignoring the animistic and spiritual aspects of my work with animal remains. I am a firm supporter of animal rights; however, I also believe that the spirits themselves need help post-death. I do not kill animals for my spirituality; a lot of what I work with are secondhand fur coats, taxidermy mounts, and what gets thrown out by fur coat factories.

As for my diet, yes, I eat meat, eggs and dairy. However, I dedicate as much of the grocery budget as I can to free range and organic food. In my belief system, plants are every bit as much alive and deserving of life as animals--it's only the anthropocentric viewpoint that claims that only beings that resemble us have any form of consciousness. Just because we haven't figured out how to communicate with non-animal spirits doesn't mean that they don't have any form of consciousness. Cleve Backster's Primary Perception research has begun the rudimentary beginnings of scientific research on how to communicate with plants.

I am an animist. *Everything* has a spirit, and I work with those spirits. To me, eating a plant that was ripped from the ground is no different than eating an animal killed for food. What is important to me is how the animals and plants lived and how they were killed. In order for me to live, something has to die, unless I manage to live entirely on fruits and nuts, and grains that are somehow harvested without killing the plant.

In the end, it's a delicate balance based on *personal* choices. I don't believe in playing guilt trips or the shame game in order to make people see things my way. I present my perspective, and that's it.

In other words, please don't use my blog for your personal agenda.

It's a shame that such a helpful form of spirituality must rely on killing animals. Its is a learned cultural habit that we can unlearn. I strongly recommend this web site by another author http://compassionatecooks.com/ and for you to listen to her podcast about eating animals.

Good luck along your spiritual journey.
