For those of you on Tumblr, my book Skin Spirits caused some debate and discussion, some of it heated, over there.
So in an attempt to try to salvage something good out of all of this, I’m giving away a free copy of the book–just reblog this post linked here on Tumblr!
(Wasn’t I just talking about not being able to please everyone regarding the cultural appropriation thing? At least I can hopefully make someone happier with a free book.)
Guess we have to have a Tumblr to participate huh? 😦
Guess to participate we have to have a Tumblr, huh? 😦
And I’m apparently brain dead today as I actually already have that book of yours! *facepalm* S never mind my original question.
Yeah, though I intend to do more general giveaways, too. This was just a way to try to make some lemonade out of a crappy situation.
*sigh* I knew that was coming. Just earlier this week I saw someone imply that anyone who uses the word shaman or neo-shaman was an appropriating racist bigot that needed to be called out. I’m sorry you’re the one that got lashed out at, since you are so acutely aware of the issues. (And people completely dismissing anything you have to say about yourself because you’re otherkin? That’s terrible. e.o )
I wasn’t aware you had a tumblr! Maybe it’s time I finally made an account…
It’s that time, now, where I realize I need to stand my ground when i say “This is the balance I’ve come to and I’m sticking to it”. And Tumblr is fun, if a bit on the addictive side!
I wasn’t able to see the comments. Maybe it’s better that way.
❤
Most likely.
Sounds like you had it really going on over there. Remember the old Aesop’s fable of trying to please all the people all the time. Anyway, even my work which is as far from shamanism as possible, I get folks complaining about cultural appropriation. I think it is one of those issues that is like ‘activist judges’ – only the speaker knows what they mean, the rest of us remain confused.
Thank you, and your point is well made.
My favorite part of the whole thing was the part about how Paganism is better than neopaganism. I loled.
Ah yes, yet another semantic debate of one upsmanship! Such is human creativity, I suppose.
I followed that whole mess, and just. . wow. It def. qualifies as a case of ‘ you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink’.
I’ve seen you have these sorts of troubles before, Lupa, and goodness, I’m sorry it happens so often. I’ve been watching you do your pathwork for years and I’ve always thought you’ve made it pretty crystal-durned clear where you stand, but. Maybe that’s just me. 😉
As an addendum, Lupa, I just read a really great book that had interesting things to say about Native American culture via when Europeans came to settle here, and the events that eventually made a total mess of their various cultures (to put it mildly T.T). It’s called “Lies my Teacher Told Me”, and you might find it interesting.
Oooh, thank you–I’ve heard it recommended before but this gives it more weight.
